Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) continues to experience record passenger growth across its four airports – with seven per cent growth for the group delivering its strongest March on record.
Gold Coast, Townsville, Mount Isa and Longreach airports all recorded growth, with the Gold Coast buoyed by athlete and spectator arrivals for the Commonwealth Games coinciding with Queensland and New South Wales school holidays.
Townsville Airport was the hero of the group, with 14.6 per cent growth delivering its biggest percentage jump in the past eight years and making it one of Australia’s fastest growing airports.

Passenger numbers increased at each of the QAL airports compared to the previous year, with the group collectively welcoming 768,719 passengers in December – an increase of 4.2 per cent.

Townsville Airport saw stellar growth of 10.4 per cent on the same month in the prior year, with more than 14,000 additional passengers passing through the terminal in the airport’s busiest August on record.
Gold Coast and Townsville university students and staff can now connect to their campus networks from their local airports following an agreement between Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) and AARNet (Australia’s Academic and Research Network), the Australian operator of the Eduroam global wireless network access service for the research and education sector.

The result represents 2.4 per cent growth on FY16, when just over 8 million passengers moved through QAL’s airports on the Gold Coast and in Townsville, Mount Isa and Longreach.
It has been a mixed year for the airports, with the Gold Coast location being the only airport to show growth. However, some positive signs are starting to emerge in the other regions for the coming year.
